Welcome to PINKK

Nutrition International is pleased to launch the Projet intégré de nutrition dans les régions de Kolda et de Kédougou – PINKK – a collaboration built around an innovative, integrated and multifaceted approach to improving nutrition for Senegal’s most vulnerable people.

The Integrated Nutrition Project for the Kolda and Kedougou Regions links health care, agriculture (including livestock) and business with the aim of improving nutritional health and food security for people in these regions, particularly for women and young children.

The PINKK partnership will reach:

  • 50,000 pregnant women and nursing mothers
  • 115,000 children who are less than 5 years old, with 60,000 from 0 to 23 months old
  • 30,000 households, especially farming households

PINKK, funded by the Government of Canada, through Global Affairs Canada, is a collaborative effort between Nutrition International, World Vision Senegal, World Vision Canada, Développement international Desjardins and the Government of Senegal’s Cellule de Lutte contre la Malnutrition (CLM).

The challenge

PINKK is an integrated nutrition project targeting two high burden regions in Senegal, Kedougou and Kolda, specifically:

  • Kolda Region: the counties of Kolda, Velingara and Medina Yero Foula
  • Kedougou Region: the counties of Kedougou, Salemata and Saraya

Chronic malnutrition rates in these regions are among the highest in Senegal:

The key components of PINKK focus on the following:

  • Strengthen capacities of community health care
  • Support local, enriched flour production by supporting capacity-building for women’s organizations, prioritizing local products, including corn, ground maize, cowpea, peanut and monkey bread powder
  • Support the development and implementation of business plans to create a foundation for microbusinesses and small and medium-sized companies
  • Promotion of good nutrition and health practices, including:
    • Breastfeeding exclusively
    • Adequate additional food supplied after 6 months of age
    • Washing hands with soap
    • Supplementing micronutrients in the diets of infants, adolescents and women
    • Psychological and emotional care for young children
  • Strengthen capacities in communities and households for food security improvement, targeting:
    • Horticultural production (vegetables)
    • Transforming local products
    • Fruit tree production
    • Diversification activities, especially for small-scale livestock farming
  • Strengthen the capacity of local government structures to:
    • improve nutrition management issues in planning and programs
    • Implement the means of coordination
    • Implement nutrition and food security programs in the Kolda and Kedougou regions

Over the next five years, PINKK partners will focus on achieving the following:

  • Improve nutritional practices (including food, health, hygiene, etc.), especially for women and young children
  • Increase access to nutritious food, especially for women and young children
  • Increase management of issues linked to nutrition in the Senegalese Government’s plans and programs

One of the PINKK’s greatest assets is that it brings together the greatest complementary expertise required to attain results in nutrition and food security.

While offering the technical framework and vision for PINKK, Nutrition International will work in collaboration with World Vision Senegal for direct implementation in communities with a focus on such activities as:

  • Training
  • awareness campaigns
  • distribution of nutritional products
  • installing points of service

Développement International Desjardins will offer financial and non-financial services to microbusinesses and small to mid-sized companies involved in producing micronutrient-rich foods.

CLM will encourage and advocate working with institutional government.
